speed reading
hey people! For the past 4 days i have been sleeping 'early' ... i remembered on Sunday i only managed to fall asleep ard 3am ba? Somehow my mind is very active & i couldnt sleep, quite frustrating actually when you have to force urself to sleep when the rest of the world is already in lala land.
Subsequently, i always ended up sleeping only after 0100 ... dont know what is going on, haha. But i dont feel tired enough to sleep. Now, i always stay up till my eyes are tired before sleeping. Not really a good thing since frequent late nights will lead to low immune system.
Yday, went to sch & there's this mini bazaar going on which attracted me. So i went & have a look at the books being sold... I was feeling excited when i saw a wide range of Tony Buzan's books. Lol. Tony Buzan was in school having some talks but i didnt see him. I knew i have to get a book ydae & time was running short since my next lesson was starting, so it took me about 10 mins b4 i decided to get the book on 'speed reading'
I am trying to find ways on improving on my reading speed and was even deciding to attend some courses. I thought i saw some advertisement in the newspaper before but when i flipped to look for them, they are nowhere to be found. So when i chanced upon the book, i knew i have to get it.
There are a few tests & exercises to keep track of your progress in your reading skills & how well you comprehend the passage. The 1st test i took was to gauge my reading speed & i got what the average person has which is around 248 words per min (wpm). The fastest record in the word is 3850 wpm. WOW!
Initially i was trying to 'speed read' but at the same time i was afraid i didnt comprehend the passage since i was reading too 'fast'. Take a look at the scores i have for the 3 tests i have taken
test 1 speed : 248.8 wpm , 60% comprehension
test 2 speed : 256.12 wpm, 42.8% comprehension
test 3 speed : 291.09 wpm, 80% comprehension
how the test works is that you time yourself for reading for about 4-5 pages of passage, afterwhich you answer 15 questions with regards to the passage w/o refering back to what you've read. This will test your comprehension of the passage.
The 2nd test was a 'downfall'. I thought maybe i 'chiong' too fast for my own good, comprehension went down. I took the 3rd test just now after using the technique specify in the book (which is to use a guide as your reading, meaning you use a pen or needle, something slim, placed under the word & move as you read)
Many people has the misconception that when you use your fingers to guide yourself when you read,it slows down your speed, but it aint true. The guide is there to provide FOCUS. You can try it for yourself! But i believe it takes practice for further improvements.
The 3rd test shows some improvements in the speed & also comprehension. I am thrilled about the chapters behind. In fact, there's a table & chart @ the back of the book to record your own progress. So i am hoping to see the gradual improvements after going through each chapters.
Yeah, this week i might be away from home for 2 days. Lol. Think this week im building up on my eyebags. Oh well, i'll blog more next time : )
